• Pioneering Video Artist Dara Birnbaum Shares Her Take on the Rising A.I. Tidal Wave

January 2024. In a wide-ranging interview spanning Birnbaum’s Birnbaum’s career and the changing media landscape, she reflects on art’s capacity to challenge established perspectives. Asked whether she had ever considered leaving her career, she responds: “My brother is a doctor; he saves people. And then I have to say to myself that art can change the way people think and it can challenge them to [see] new perspectives. You can save people too.”

  • Who is Dara Birnbaum, artist of video as an act of rebellion

May 2023 · Brenda Vaiani. A review of Birnbaum’s exhibition at the Fondazione Prada Observatory in Milan, examining the lasting influence of her appropriation, remixing, and editing of popular television. "Dara Birnbaum’s use of popular television tools has been revolutionary: the appropriation, remixing, and editing that have marked her production have influenced not only new generations, but the visual language itself."

  • Dara Birnbaum

April 2023 · Chiara Cappelli. A review of Birnbaum’s exhibition at Fondazione Prada, considering how her practice has evolved in response to cultural change and successive generations. "Birnbaum has been able to renew and transform herself with the flow of time, with the changes around her and with the succession of generations, varying the tools and terminologies that have made her work contemporary and innovative."

  • Turning the Media Against Itself: Dara Birnbaum Michelle Kuo, Rahel Aima, and Emmanuel Olunkwa in conversation

March 2023. In a discussion accompanying the presentation of Tiananmen Square: Break-In Transmission (1990) in Signals: How Video Transformed the World at the Museum of Modern Art, curator Michelle Kuo describes the work as: “a linchpin of the show, both spatially and in terms of the aesthetic project that it brings to bear.”

  • Slippage and Misdirection: Dara Birnbaum in Conversation With Martine Syms

October 2022 · Dara Birnbaum, Lauren Cornell and Martine Syms. In connection with concurrent shows at the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College, Birnbaum and Syms have a wide-ranging discussion on the generational differences of their careers in video. Describing the seventies, Birnbaum notes: “At that time in television, the dialogue was one of the more perverse features of this new medium, with the speed of delivery preventing viewers from reflecting on or, at times, even comprehending the content. Every night of the week at primetime, these dramas were imposing an adversarial language onto the show’s main characters by using film techniques like reverse-angle shots. Television was a one-way medium...”

  • Dara Birnbaum in Conversation with Dr.Kostas Prapoglou

August 2020 · Dr. Kostas Prapoglou. In this interview, Birnbaum reflects on how her practice has responded to cultural shifts throughout her career. Considering the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, she observes: “artists have, historically, paved the way for new insights and it is my hope that this can happen again.”

  • Changing Channels: Dara Birnbaum’s Televisual Art Comes into Focus

March 2018 · Alex Greenberger. Surveying Birnbaum’s career, Greenberger examines her critique of television’s representations of women, including Wonder Woman, whose empowering image Birnbaum viewed as another form of disempowerment. “For some women at the time, Wonder Woman was an inspiring figure, a metaphor for feminist might. But for Birnbaum, the character was an embodiment of the same kind of disempowering images she had been seeing on television for years. “I wouldn’t call that liberation,” she told me. “How dare you confront me with this supposedly super-powered image of a woman who is stronger than I am and can also save mankind? I can’t do that, and I won’t—and there’s no middle ground in between. The middle ground is what we need to work from.”

  • Dara Birnbaum & Matt Saunders: Trauma and media manipulation at work

July 2016 · Chris Chang. In a conversation accompanying simultaneous exhibitions at Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris, Birnbaum and Saunders consider representations of trauma and the ethics of depicting suffering. “I was thinking of Susan Sontag’s Regarding The Pain of Others. How can one express the horrific side of what’s going on in our society without it being a spectacle?”

  • In the Studio: Dara Birnbaum

April 2016 · Lauren Cornell. Following the premiere of Psalm (29)30, Cornell asks Birnbaum what drives her to pursue new directions in her work. Birnbaum responds: “I think it’s partly maturity and growth, and maybe it’s partly my nature that I feel like I need to constantly challenge myself. In a society that’s constantly yelling, maybe it’s a strong whisper that can best be heard.”

  • In Conversation: Dara Birnbaum and Cory Arcangel

March 2009 · Cory Arcangel. In this conversation, Birnbaum and Arcangel consider generational differences in media access and use. “Maybe this is the real difference between our generations. In pirating there was no way to talk back to the media. The stuff was coming one way at you and there was no way to arrest it, stop the action, divert it, alter the vocabulary, or change the syntax. Your hacking, on the other hand, is coming from almost total accessibility.”

  • Cable TV's Failed Utopian Vision: An Interview with Dara Birnbaum

Winter 2002–03 · Nicolás Guagnini. Subtitled “televisual activism and the revolution that never was,” this interview revisits Radical Software and early efforts to develop alternatives to broadcast television, exploring the potential of cable as a medium for alternative programming. “It was innocent to believe that cable was not related to a capitalist notion of big business. For me, cable is not a failed utopia because it never was one. It was during its rise and expansion that room was left over for a multiplicity of programming. There was a need for software and for a moment it was possible to provide alternative forms of programming within those spots.”

  • Portrait of Artist 41: Conversation with Dara Birnbaum

September 1995 · Hans-Ulrich Obrist.‍ ‍In this interview for Museum in Progress, Birnbaum reflects on her early career, her time in Berkeley, and the changing critical vocabulary surrounding her appropriation of media imagery. “It's interesting, because in the seventies I had this ferocious image. I was a singular woman pirate. I got my photo around a lot, ‘Yeah, she's the pirateer of the images.’ Then…’Oh, she appropriated images’ (in the early eighties). ‘She stole images’ (in the mid-eighties). ‘Oh, she samples images’ (in the nineties). It kind of goes like that as the generations change.”

  • To Talk Back or to Talk With: Interview with Dara Birnbaum

February 1986 · Willem Velthoven and Klaus vom Bruch. In this conversation, published in connection with the 1985 Talking Back to the Media festival, Birnbaum discusses her decision to work in video and the importance of using television’s own language as a vehicle for critique. “I wanted to talk about the form of language that was the most popular and dominant at that time in America so I used that as the vocabulary of the work. When I saw people trying to tackle for instance the content of a film, frequently it was done by translating it into a different medium. such as photography, drawing etcetera. It looked more estheticized to take this and put it into a painting or a type of framework that was already being dealt with. I thought it was really necessary to have the medium itself provide the vehicle.”

  • Talking Back to the Media

February 1985 · Dara Birnbaum. First published in the catalogue for the Amsterdam festival of the same name, the piece was republished in e-flux Notes in May 2025. Birnbaum’s essay articulates her commitment to using television imagery to expose and subvert the ideological structures of mass media. “I consider it to be our responsibility to become increasingly aware of alternative perspectives which can be achievable through our use of media—and to consciously find the ability for expression of the "individual voice"—whether it be dissension, affirmation, or neutrality...”

  • Allegorical Procedures: Appropriation and Montage in Contemporary Art

September 1982 · Benjamin H. D. Buchloh. In this critical history of appropriation and montage, Buchloh situates these strategies within a critique of Marx’s concept of commodity fetishism, examining how Birnbaum challenges the ideology underlying television’s visual pleasures. “Birnbaum’s perspective on the technique of television does not seduce her into using those techniques as visual gadgetry employed for the sake of “pure pleasure” or “formal play,” which always conceal estheticizing ideology. The visual pleasure that Birnbaum’s tapes may generate in the viewer is balanced by cognitive shock.”
